FREE: Make your own 3D Alpha Texture Brushes with Blender (Project File)
Occasionally I need a specific brush shape for sculpting or texturing models so I've started using this quick method for turning 3D geometry into Alpha texture, which I can reimport to create custom brushes. The cool thing is they work in most software that use Alphas. Including Substance designer, Zbrush, Blender etc. I've created a project template anyone can download to quickly generate your own.
It’s as simple as sculpting your 3D texture on a flat plane, then set-up an orthographic camera and render a mist pass (just make sure it’s enabled in the view layer settings). After that, use the mist pass output in the compositor with a color ramp applied to invert it and fine-tune the final image. Save it as a PNG, and it’s good to go for any software that uses alpha brushes.
Enjoy!
